Weekend recap: Badgers crown five champs at Roadrunner Open

Five Wisconsin wrestlers claimed championships at the Roadrunner Open in Bakersfield, Cali. Sunday.

Eli Stickley (141 pounds), Zander Wick (149), Ryan Christensen (174), No.20 Evan Wick (165) and No.11 Ricky Robertson (184) each finished tops in their respective weight classes.

Stickley bested teammate Cole Martin 6-3 in the championship match at 141 pounds. He ended his day with a perfect 4-0 record.

Meanwhile, Zander Wick topped No.19 Eric Barone (Illinois) in the title bout at 149. Wick compiled five wins, including two pins, en route to his individual championship.

Evan Wick grabbed his first tournament championship in a UW singlet with four bonus-point wins. He racked up two technical falls and a pair of major decisions, including a 13-5 win over No.17 Lorenzo De La Riva in the championship bout.

The triumph was Wick’s second win over De La Riva on the weekend.

The first-place match at 174 pounds was another showdown between UW teammates. Christensen bested Jacob Covaciu 2-1 to capture the top spot on the podium.

Robertson dominated the field at 184. After a pair of victories in Friday’s tri-dual, he capped a 7-0 weekend with five wins Sunday. Three pins and a technical fall put Robertson into the title bout where he topped Emery Parker of Illinois 3-1.

At 157 pounds, Andrew Crone rode three straight victories all the way to the title bout. There, he fell to No.16 Kyle Langenderfer of Illinois 9-4.

Four wins lifted Ben Stone to the finals at heavyweight. However, he was pinned by No.15 Youssif Hemida (Maryland) 2:46 into first-place match

In total, 14 of Wisconsin’s 15 entries placed.

Jens Lantz (133) and Hunter Ritter (197) each finished third, while Ethan Rotondo (125) placed fourth.

Jared Scharenbrock (157) and Mason Reinhardt (197) each took fifth.

The Badgers’ next competition is the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Dec. 1-2.


UW opened the dual meet portion of its schedule with a pair of wins.

The No.20 Badgers topped No.23 Pittsburgh 26-6 before topping host CSU-Bakersfield 22-18, sweeping the tri-dual.

Wisconsin won eight of 10 bouts in its dual with Pitt (1-2). All three of UW’s nationally-ranked wrestlers earned victories.

Evan Wick earned a 6-3 decision over Jake Wentzel at 165 pounds, while Ritter also won by decision at 197.

At 184 pounds, Robertson won by major decision over Zach Bruce by a count of 9-1.

Christensen recorded the only other bonus-point triumph for UW. He bested Tommy O’Brien by major decision, 11-0.

Crone (157) upended No.15 Talen Rahmani 3-1, courtesy of a late takedown.

The Badgers closed the night with a win over the host Roadrunners (2-4).

With his team down 9-0, Eli Stickley put UW on the board with a 13-2 major decision over No.19 Russell Rohlfing.

Stickley’s victory was the first in a string of six straight that clinched the dual for Wisconsin.

Evan Wick earned his second win of the night, a 7-1 decision over No.17 Russell Rohlfing. He was one of four Badgers to go 2-0 on the night. Zander Wick, Robertson and Christensen also accomplished the feat.

At 197, Ritter dropped a tough 4-1 match to No.10 Matt Williams.

With the wins, the Badgers start their dual season 2-0 for the second consecutive year.

Wisconsin returns to dual action on Dec.7 when it hosts Maryland in a Big Ten battle.
