Redshirt Report: Three freshmen win titles for UW at Pointer Open

Three Wisconsin freshman claimed individual championships at the Pointer Open Saturday in Stevens Point.

Trey Escobar (141 pounds), Dan Stilling (149), and Josh Otto (165) each kicked off their college careers with titles.

The trio were among five UW wrestlers to stand atop the podium at Saturday’s season-opening event.

Escobar powered to finals with a pair of major decisions before topping teammate Nicholas Termini in the title bout by a count of 5-3.

Meanwhile, Stilling posted back-to-back pins in his first two matches. He then bested Robert Areyano (Central (IA)) in the championship match via an 8-3 decision.

Otto used a pair of major decisions to work his way into the semis at 165 where he topped Ben Kasten (UW-Stevens Point) 14-9.

Otto topped another UWSP foe, Jordan Weinzetl, 10-8 in the finals.

Junior Ethan Rotondo took home top honors for the Badgers at 125. He topped Koltin Grzybowski (UW-Parkside) 9-0 in the championship match.

Redshirt sophomore Devin Bahr captured the crown at 157 as he beat teammate Drew Scharenbrock in the finals 7-5.

Freshman Kyle Burwick placed second for UW. He dropped a 4-3 decision to Matt Berlin (UW-Stevens Point) in their title tilt.

Redshirt junior Seth Vosters made his Wisconsin debut with a second-place finish. He was upended by Jordan Blanchard (UW-Oshkosh) in the finals by a count of 9-4.

Redshirt junior Patrick Spray dropped two matches to a pair of Division III opponents and was eliminated.

Spray started in eight duals for Wisconsin last season and posted a 1-7 record.
