Wisconsin wrestling upends No. 13 Illinois

A strong team effort lifted the No. 20 Wisconsin wrestling team to a 19-16 win over host No. 13 Illinois in a Big Ten Conference dual Sunday afternoon.

Though each squad one five matches, the Badgers were able to pull the upset due to some timely performances.

The Wisconsin Wrestling Federation crowned women’s high school folkstyle state champions in 13 weight classes Sunday at Poynette Middle School. 

UW-La Crosse wins WIAC Tournament

Four individual champions lifted the UW-La Crosse wrestling team to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championship Friday, February 9 in Whitewater.

Hayden Schlough (141 pounds), Mitchell Hertel (165), Sawyer Massie (174) and Konrad Ernst (285) each won their weight classes as the Eagles won the team race by 25 points.

Badgers fall to No. 14 Nebraska

Visiting Nebraska won seven of 10 matches en route to a 24-10 over Wisconsin at the UW Field House Friday night.

The evening’s proceedings began at 165 pounds where No. 12 Isaiah White of Nebraska upended No. 6 Evan Wick by a count of 7-3 to give the Cornhuskers an early 3-0 lead.

The top four individual wrestlers at each weight in Division 1, and the top two wrestlers at each weight class in Divisions 2 and 3 advance to individual sectionals.

Coaches hope out-of-state challenges lead to state tournament success

With the onset of February comes the beginning of the state tournament series.

This portion of the season is the subject of a cliché used regularly in wrestling rooms: peaking at the right time. Well, the “right time” is here.

And while the phrase may be a bit stale, the process of achieving that goal comes in a variety of forms.

From weight management strategies to specific training regiments, each program has its own way of preparing wrestlers to (hopefully) deliver their best performances as the stakes climb higher.
